Preaching to the Secular Mind

Journal of Biblical Counseling 14:1

In this article, Timothy Keller addresses preaching in post-modern culture. Keller argues that, in the modern era, only reason and the empirical method gave objective truth. In the post-modern era, neither reason nor revelation give objective truth. In light of these truths, Keller argues that secular people need (1) “themes of relevance” backed by a case for truth; (2) a long process for conversion; (3) “evangelistic pathways” in the church; (4) more pre-evangelistic apologetics; (5) preaching that is personally authentic; (6) preaching that is dialogical and reflects a “catholic spirit” generous towards Christians of other persuasions; and (7) art as well as preaching in order to “get” the gospel.
