Breaking the Silence of Domestic Violence

Even Christian families can be caught in a web of conflict and confrontation that is often secret, leading to physical violence. In this audio, Jeff Black considers pastoral responses to domestic violence, including common conceptualizations; a biblical theology of suffering; and strategies inside and outside the church to intervene. He reminds us that battering in marriage is rarely a one-time event and usually occurs in escalating patterns. Black encourages us to become advocates for the oppressed just as God is an advocate for the oppressed, and to model healthy relationships and responses to one another for married couples in our care.
