Queries and Controversies

Journal of Biblical Counseling 12:3

In this article, David Powlison responds to the question “Is the phrase unconditional love a good way to describe God’s love and the ideal human love?” Powlison maintains that God’s love is much better than unconditional, because He is attentive, involved, active, purposeful. The term unconditional sometimes carries good freight: God’s love is non-manipulative, patient, gracious, inviting. But, Powlison maintains, the term leaves out rich truths. He concludes that there are better, biblical ways to describe love and points out that God’s love entails certain conditions and expectations.
