In this audio talk, John Bettler addresses what one can do when restoration and reconciliation are not possible after divorce. How do you handle a love that is never returned? How do you handle the ongoing rejection of divorce? Bettler discusses the factors that affect the restoration process: 1.) Technical/theological views on divorce/re-marriage ((1) Fundamentalist: no divorce/re-marriage; (2) Reformed: two exceptions; (3) “Trajectory”: other possible exceptions); 2. Personal factors (children involved, etc.). Bettler discusses steps to restoration: 1.) Remember the gospel (the divorced spouse experiences what God experiences every day – God loves, we don’t, He sent); 2.) Stay in community; 3.) Watch for land mines (bargaining, blackmail, etc.); 4.) Know what to expect; and 5.) Explore the covenant (what was the nature of the marriage covenant they were in – how were they finding satisfaction in things other than Jesus?).
