In this audio talk, Steve Smallman argues that movies impact us because they tell a story – a narrative that is bigger than any one character. We as ordinary people are part of something that is way greater, bigger, and beyond us. Seeing our lives as stories can help us process the details of our daily relationships. God’s redemptive story helps reinterpret our story. Smallman uses clips from the Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Batman Begins, The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe, and Saving Private Ryan to illustrate how narrative plays a crucial role in helping us examine human need. Media and movies are fascinating to our culture because we long to be a part of stories that transcend our own individuality (we long for embarking on a quest, having a higher calling, and redemption in the end). The session ends with brief Q & A.
