In this audio talk, Tim Lane addresses the question of how you forgive others wisely without condoning their anger. Oftentimes forgiveness is reduced to a individually-focused endeavor – Forgive for your own sake – in contrast Scripture says, “Forgive because of Christ.” Lane offers several dimensions of the nature of forgiveness: 1.) It is cancelling a debt, 2.) Failure to forgive involves the exact opposite and making someone pay, 3.) Failure to forgive turns victims into victimizers, 4.) Forgiveness will cost you something, 5.) Forgiveness is an event and an ongoing process, 6.) Forgiveness is not forgetting, and 7.) Forgiveness is not peace at all costs.
Lane offers three reasons why we don’t forgive: 1.) You don’t truly believe that you need to be forgiven, 2.) You don’t think you are forgivable, and 3.) You are truly a Christian, but the utter shock of his forgiveness of you has grown dull. This session ends with a Q & A about forgiveness.
