For Christians struggling with sexual addiction, the feelings of shame and defeat can lead to despair and a wrong focus. “If I could just stop doing ________,” becomes the false goal. Addictions are an ultimate search for an alternate source of life outside of Christ, and are biblically understood as idols. Those struggling with addiction create a world to manage their needs, circumstances, and emotions apart from Christ. Helping a struggler means walking with them in the desert that results from their attempt to reform and helping them find new resources to break with the past, to manage life, and begin to encounter God anew.
