In this audio talk, Mike Emlet begins with a description of OCD through case study and diagnostic criteria. Compulsions develop to deal with obsessive thought patterns. Emlet covers the basic cycle of obsessive-compulsive behaviors and then offers several strategies to minister to individuals dealing with obsessive-compulsive patterns: 1.) We are always image-bearers – this doesn’t change even in the face of OCD; 2.) We are body-soul – we must attend to both possible contributors to OCD; 3.) Evaluate the common belief domains with OCD; 4.) Normalize the abnormal; 5.) Understand that fear is a relational issue – Help them meditate on truths about God’s control and care for us; and 6.) Help them devalue the obsessive thought. Emlet ends with a discussion on the role of medications.
