In this audio talk, David Powlison asks the question: “How will you not be defined by what happened to you?” as a starting point. He begins by examining what the word “abuse” means and elaborates on the idea with synonymous words of being used, misused, mistreated, and betrayed. Powlison examines the questions related to “getting over” abuse; will you ever get over a horrible suffering? Powlison discusses the paradox of transformation in the face of grave evils. He draws from Psalm 55, 56, and 57 to show how the Psalmist demonstrates deep affliction and yet hope that God will meet him in it. Powlison shows that these Psalms demonstrate aspects of sufferings, experience, the God who delivers, and outcry. God saves us from our sins and our sufferings. Powlison closes with a discussion of the transformation of your walk including: Going to the right people; small obediences; courage; and wise love.
