Dialectical behavioral therapy, originally pioneered to treat borderline personality disorder, has become a widely utilized approach to address a wide variety of problems. Some features, like mindfulness, have even worked their way into the self-help literature of our culture. It is a unique combination of cognitive, behavioral, and philosophical dynamics, and seems to offer a powerful approach that biblical counselors can’t afford to ignore. How do we understand it biblically? What can we learn from it while staying firmly rooted in the gospel of grace?
