Jesus was engaged consistently with outcasts—he was born in poverty and had a number of notorious characters in his family lineage. The ones who are a part of the Kingdom of God are those who are outcasts in the world. There is an invitation in scripture to enter a story. We have turned away, He pursues and appears. He makes new boundaries (He touches you, eats with you, and asks for repentance). He chooses shame. He looks down on shame. Welch discusses the way out of shame: 1. Only misfits can come; 2. Speak to the God who was shamed; 3. Believe—don’t allow the words about Christ to remain at a distance; 4. Be lifted up—(Ephesians 1); 5. Prepare for the Lord’s Supper—a time where God says I am yours and you are mine; 6. Touch people; 7. Pursue holiness—(1 Peter 1:13-16); 8. “Do you love me?”—(John 21); 9. Receive your benedictions (Numbers 6:22-27, 1 Peter 2:9-10).
