Who Are We? Needs, Longings, and the Image of God in Man

Journal of Biblical Counseling 13:1

In this article, Ed Welch discusses the category of needs. He defines the various popular uses of the term, and the history of the concept in the field of psychology. Welch looks at how the idea of “psychological needs” has become grafted into contemporary Christian counseling and argues that biblical teaching on the image of God leads us in a different direction. Welch argues that the center of gravity in the universe is God and His glory—holiness—not our longings. Welch concludes that Scripture never teaches that we have God-given longings for relationship, worth, and significance. He concludes his article with practical counseling implications formed from these biblical convictions.
