In this article, W.S. Hyland examines the unique differences between a pastor counseling in a local church and a pastoral counselor in a parachurch organization. Hyland draws on the biblical image of the shepherd as a guiding metaphor to the duties and function of a pastoral counselor. He uses the image of the rod and staff and expands the function of each in shepherding.
