In this article, Leslie Vernick maintains when couples enter counseling, each spouse wants the other to change. Vernick argues that in order to have true change, each partner must see God’s purposes in marriage: to teach us holiness. She argues that when engaging in marital combat, we need to fight for higher purposes: the glory of God, the preservation of our marriages, our spiritual health and well-being, and our children’s future.” Vernick concludes that marriage brings lessons in practical theology—how we live out our faith every day.
