In this article, William Smith argues that God speaks into the experience of sufferers, both through the content spoken and the manner of speaking. Smith gives guidance for how to work with counselees, and how to connect their stories with Scripture. He encourages counselors to address the question “What is God doing in your life, even in these difficult circumstances?” Smith concludes that understanding God’s plan for your life requires a change from just complaining about your problems to looking for His purposes.
