In this editorial, David Powlison addresses the question “What do you do to prepare for a counseling session and why do you prepare in the ways you do?” Powlison presents several aspects of his preparation for counseling: (1) Follow through on our commitments; (2) Check your own life and attitudes; (3) Study and Bible reading; (4) Think hard about those with whom you’ll meet; (5) Pray for each person, asking God to work; (6) Set a rough agenda; (7) Review basic principles of counseling to orient yourself and (8) Do things that orient you to the ministry task.
