A Case for Illustrative Preaching

In this article, Steve Jussely presents observations on effective preaching and argues that boring preaching is not biblical preaching. Jussely maintains that good preaching is vivid and “illustrative”; concrete and pictorial rather than abstract and academic. He discusses how illustrative preaching is demanded by Scripture, by human nature, by the nature of language and by contemporary culture. Jussely concludes that the nature of the Bible demands illustrative preaching and encourages pastors to consider how their preaching can improve their preaching style.
