In this audio talk, David Powlison begins with a definition of intimacy and companionship within marriage: Intimacy includes conversation of consequence and actions that count. What causes ‘distance,’ loss of intimacy, and mistrust? Powlison offers the answer that “you are preoccupied elsewhere.” He uses the parable of the sower to illustrate how failures of faith always lead to failures of love. Intimacy is a by-product of getting first things first. God’s steadfast love and faithfulness are reflective of what true friendship and intimacy look like. Powlison covers several actions steps for the distant marriage: Turn (from your sin and toward Christ and your spouse); Enter (the world of your spouse); Three questions to ask and answer – 1.) Where are your burdens and troubles? 2.) Where are your joys and gratitude? and 3.) Where are your aspirations and purpose? Powlison ends with a discussion of specific situations where “I have been the distant one” and “My spouse has been the distant one.”
