Family: Embracing the Blessing, Facing the Brokenness

Our families form us. Families shape who we are. At its best, a family is a place of intimacy and trust, a safe place of knowing and being known. It’s a place where you are loved despite your faults and failings, where you are supported through the hardest times. At its worst, a family is a place of betrayal or neglect, where you experience isolation and rejection. It’s a place where you are all too familiar with the sting of shame. Oftentimes, these aspects of goodness and brokenness are even tangled together.

Given that we all have such different experiences in our families, it can be easy to be confused about what God intended families to be when he created them. It can be hard to know what family ought to be and how it should look. It can also be hard to know how to live well in our particular families. How do you love well, and help others to love well, in your family that has its own unique set of blessings and challenges?

The Bible is no stranger to the complexities of family. There is not a single family in all of Scripture that is held up as an idealized role model! And the God of Scripture—our Father, his beloved Son, and the Spirit—is committed to teach us gratitude for the good ways our families reflect his love. And he is committed to teaching us how to wisely engage when a family fails to reflect his love.

At CCEF’s 2017 national conference, we will look carefully at how Christ illumines both our understanding of and our engagement in our relationships.
