On that same day I was listening to a married couple when I heard the husband say it.

“I should . . . .”

“Stop, stop, stop,” I blurted out before he could say anything else. Should, I thought, was a dirty word in this case.

I submitted a chapter for a book. The editor suggested that I should aim for 8-10,000 words. After I submitted it, the publisher pulled rank and mandated that all chapters be 5,000 words or less.

I labored to cut it back but it was still over the word count. I told the editor I was at bare bones—there was nothing else I could cut. Content creation is an integral part of CCEF’s development of the biblical counseling movement. One of the primary ways CCEF advances our mission is by publishing the Journal of Biblical Counseling (JBC). This spring, we took a bold step when we re-launched the JBC and made each current issue free on our website. Were we crazy to do this? Take a look at some of these stats:

“Why?”

“Why me?”

These questions, along with scores of variations, tend to be our first response to hardships. Sometimes they reflect fear, “Did I do something wrong? Am I being punished?” Sometimes they reflect anger, “Why are you treating me this way!? This hurts!” Either way, we often complicate our suffering with all kinds of analysis.

Marriage counseling is hard work and couples need tremendous amounts of hope to stay the course. Good news for biblical counselors, right? After all, the Bible is full of reasons for hope. But here’s where the Bible’s strength can become a potential weakness in a counseling situation. Of course, pointing couples to the love and power of Christ is the surest hope that we could ever offer, but we must be mindful of how it’s done. It’s possible to deliver even that wonderful hope in a clumsy way that actually does more harm than good.

A man becomes convicted of his unethical business activity from two years earlier. At the time his sole ethic was profit, now it is to follow Jesus, so he reports himself to the relevant authorities and the cost to him and his family could be devastating.

That is so encouraging, so inspiring.

Another man is nursing an unquiet conscience because of some past business practices, which he stopped for fear of being caught. Recently, he was found out, and the cost to him and his family could be devastating.

That is embarrassing and shameful.
