Counselors

CCEF's counselors are trained to deal with all of life's challenges in light of God's revelation to us in the Bible. Therefore, every counselor is available to counsel on a variety of issues. In addition, some counselors have particular areas of interest and/or experience. You will find them listed below each counselor's personal information.

 

Laura Andrews
Laura has a Master of Divinity degree in Counseling from Westminster Theological Seminary and a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Missouri.  She completed the CCEF internship prior to beginning her work as a counselor and has participated in various ministries through her church. She is the Counseling Intern Coordinator and teaches the Counseling Observation Intensive class at CCEF. She enjoys cooking with her husband, Joel, photography, singing, playing games with friends and listening to movie scores.  Areas of interest/experience: marriage counseling, anxiety, depression, young adults, teens, and women's issues.

 
Cecelia Bernhardt
Cecelia is the director of counseling as well as an associate faculty at CCEF. She has completed the Advanced Counseling Certificate through CCEF and also has a Master of Divinity degree from Westminster Theological Seminary.  She has worked in various Christian ministries for many years, including women’s ministries at her church.  She enjoys her large family, reading, music and flowers - live and in water color.  Areas of interest/experience: women's issues, singleness, young adults, teens, marriage counseling, depression, and sexual abuse.
 

Wendy Budnick
Wendy is a counselor at CCEF. She has a Masters of Arts in Counseling from Biblical Theological Seminary. She has been counseling at CCEF for over a decade.  She has also worked in ministry with her church, including teaching, leading small groups, in addition to working with youth and young adults.  Wendy is married to her husband David and they have four children.  In her free time, she enjoys gardening, music, the beach, swimming, and spending time with friends and family.  Areas of interest/experience: depression, self-injury, anxiety, young adults, teens, eating disorders and sexual abuse.

 

Melissa Clemens
Melissa holds a Master of Arts degree in Biblical Counseling from Westminster Theological Seminary and a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Presbyterian College.  She has completed the CCEF counseling internship.  Melissa worked for two years as a staff intern at Tenth Presbyterian Church with a focus on women’s ministry and discipleship.  She also works as a high school guidance counselor in Philadelphia.  Melissa is a member of a young church plant in her South Philly neighborhood, and in her free time she enjoys cooking (and eating!), gardening, spending time with friends, and the great outdoors.  Areas of interest/experience:  women’s issues, single-parenting, teens, young adults, and caring for caregivers.

 

Bonnie Currie
Bonnie holds a Master of Arts in Biblical Counseling from Westminster Theological Seminary, a Master of Science in Post-Secondary Education from Troy University, and two bachelor degrees from the University of Georgia.  She completed the CCEF internship prior to beginning her work as a counselor.  Bonnie has extensive experience working with children and adolescents – as a counselor, high school teacher, and youth-ministry leader, and has also led groups for her church.   Bonnie and her husband Chris live in west Philadelphia, where they are actively involved in youth ministry and serve as a host family for international students.  She enjoys reading, hanging out with friends, being outside, and traveling.  Areas of interest/experience: children and adolescents, depression, anxiety, and women’s issues.

 

Mike Emlet
Mike is a faculty member and directs CCEF's School of Biblical Counseling - Philadelphia Campus.  He holds an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Divinity degree from Westminster Theological Seminary.  Mike has counseled for many years and has published CrossTalk: Where Life and Scripture Meet, which explores the use of Scripture in Counseling.  He worked as a family physician for twelve years before joining CCEF.  Mike is married to Jody, and they have two children.  He is active in his urban church and, when he has time, creates beautiful pieces on a potter's wheel!  Areas of interest/experience: OCD, anxiety, depression, and pastoral struggles and burnout. 

 
Michael Gembola
Michael holds a Master of Arts in Religion (Biblical Studies) and a Master of Arts in Counseling from Westminster Theological Seminary, as well as a BA in English from Bob Jones University.  Before coming on staff, he completed counseling internships at CCEF and Harvest USA.  He has involvement in the ministry of his church as a small group leader, in children's ministry, and in their addictions ministry.  Michael is married to his wife, Kelly.  He enjoys basketball, exploring big cities, local history, writing, and playing guitar.  Areas of interest/experience: anxiety, depression, OCD, singleness, and men's issues.
 

Alasdair Groves
Alasdair received his B.A. from Dartmouth College and his M.Div. (counseling emphasis) from Westminster Theological Seminary.  He is Director of Counseling at our New England Affiliate office.  He completed the CCEF internship followed by a year-long residency (assisting internship supervision and counseling).  He also has several years of experience as a staff worker in college campus ministry.  Alasdair and his wife Lauren are the proud parents of two daughters.  He is a fiction enthusiast, and though parenting has curtailed his opportunities, he also enjoys playing ultimate frisbee and both producing and enjoying good food and music.  Areas of interest/experience: sexual addictions, grief and dying, the intersection of faith and emotions, obsessive thinking/compulsive behaviors, and helping couples prepare for marriage.

 

Monica Kim
Monica is Associate Faculty at CCEF. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Toronto, Canada and a Master of Arts in Religion from Westminster Theological Seminary. Monica has worked in church ministry for over fifteen years and is currently a part of the pastoral staff at her local church.  As a part of the staff she speaks, teaches Bible studies, leads women's groups and counsels youth and families. She is married to Danny, an ordained Pastor, and they have three boys. Monica enjoys spending time with her children and tasting new food with her husband, and she is fluent in the Korean language. Areas of interest/experience: premarital, marriage, family, anxiety, depression and multicultural issues.

 

Gregory F. Lowe
Greg has a depth of training with a Master of Divinity degree from Westminster Theological Seminary, a Master of Social Work from the University of South Florida and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Florida Institute of Technology.  His many years of counseling experience include formal counseling and counseling the severely mentally ill.  He also has work experience in of hospice and end of life issues.  Greg is married and a parent of five.  He and his wife serve as foster/adoptive parents.  He enjoys hiking and outdoor activities, weight lifting and keeping up on health issues.  Areas of interest/experience: sexual addiction, pornography and men's issues.

 

Julie Smith Lowe
Julie is Associate Faculty at CCEF and a Counselor with over fifteen years experience.  She has a Master of Arts degree in Counseling from Biblical Theological Seminary, is a Licensed Professional Counselor and is pursuing certification as a Registered Play Therapist.  She has extensive experience with women's issues, body image issues, parenting, and child maltreatment issues.  She speaks at events regarding body image, women's issues, parenting and children, conflict resolution, and helping churches and ministries work through issues of abuse.  Julie and her husband, Greg, have five children and serve as foster parents.  While at CCEF, Julie has developed a play therapy office and resources to better serve families and children.  Areas of interest/experience: women's issues, teens and children, body image, adoption, sexual abuse and trauma, and issues regarding parenting & children.

 

Chase Maxey
Chase Maxey is the Director of Ministry Advancement and a counselor at CCEF.  He holds a Bachelors of Business Administration degree from the University of Mississippi and fulfills a Master of Arts in Biblical Counseling degree from Westminster Theological Seminary in 2013.  Chase has completed the internship at CCEF.  Prior to relocating from Mississippi, Chase worked as a financial advisor for over a decade helping families plan for retirement across the Southeast.  He and his wife Martha are blessed with three children.  Areas of interest/experience:  premarital counseling, marriage counseling, addictions, grief and death, professional/business workplace issues.

 

Rosemary McElhenny
Rosie holds a Master of Divinity degree from Westminster Theological Seminary with an emphasis in Counseling.  While counseling at CCEF for over a decade, she has worked in church ministry for over twenty years. She leads a supervision group for counselors and supervises interns by providing observation opportunities at CCEF. Rosie has served on the Women's Ministry Council and Discipleship Commission at Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, as well as teaching Sunday School and leading a women's bible study. In addition, she assists her husband, John, in his diaconal duties.  She and John enjoy restoring their historic 1870 home and gardens. When time allows, she enjoys the outdoors, handcrafting textiles, and reading.  Areas of interest/experience: trauma, abuse, women's issues, marriage counseling, relationship issues, anxiety, depression, and psychiatric issues.

 

Liz Mosebrook
Liz holds a master of arts in counseling from Biblical Seminary, and a B.S and B.Mus. from Cairn University.  She has completed the internship at CCEF and also has extensive ministry experience with children and with cross-cultural workers through her local church.  Liz often uses play and other expressive activities to counsel children, young adults, and families.  She enjoys hanging out in the city, going hiking, running, and rock climbing, music (piano and singing), and cooking.  Areas of interest/experience: children and adolescents, angry children, family counseling, depression, anxiety, self-destructive behaviors, singleness, cross-cultural issues, abuse.

 

Brian Munnings
Brian Munnings is a counselor at CCEF and holds a Master of Divinity degree from Westminster Theological Seminary with an emphasis in Counseling.  He went through the CCEF internship program before becoming a counselor.  He worked two years interning at his previous church in Toronto, focusing on teen mentoring, leading addiction groups and assisting in outreach ministries.  Brian and his wife Dana have two wonderful children.  He loves to play tennis, enjoy thai food with his wife, and play street hockey with the neighborhood kids.  Areas of interest/experience: children/teens, premarital and marriage counseling, depression, and paranoia.

 

Aaron Sironi
Aaron is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor at our CCEF affiliate office in his home state of Montana and has been counseling for nearly a decade.  He holds a Master of Science degree in Marital and Family Therapy from Fuller Theological Seminary and is a certified Level I, II and III biblical counselor from CCEF, and completed a year long residency at CCEF.  He is delightfully married to his wife Kellie, and they have three sons.  Aaron grow up in the Midwest but Montana is where he calls home.  He enjoys spending time with his family, all things outdoors,  traveling, and sports.  Areas of interest/experience: marriage, family, psychiatric issues, social/relational anxiety, shyness, forgiveness, and Hispanic culture and language.

 

Winston T. Smith
Winston is a faculty member at CCEF and holds a Master of Divinity degree from Westminster Theological Seminary.  He has been counseling for many years and has recently published his first book: Marriage Matters.  Winston is married to his wife Kim, and they have three children.  Winston enjoys reading, listening to music, exercise, chess and other games of strategy.  Areas of interest/experience: marriage and family, sexual addiction, depression and anxiety.

 

Darby Strickland
Darby has a Master of Divinity degree in Counseling from Westminster Theological Seminary and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Bio-psychology from the University of Chicago.  She has been doing formal counseling for over a decade.  In addition to serving as a missionary to Northern Ireland for two years, she has also supported the ministry of the church as a speaker at women's retreats, bible study teacher, and support group leader.  While focused on marriage and family counseling, Darby has a special interest in working with abused and developmentally delayed children.  She and her husband, John, have three young children.  Her hobbies include photography, swimming, reading, and word games.  Areas of interest/experience: marriage counseling, abuse, anxiety, children with developmental differences, and family issues.

 

Todd Stryd
Todd is the counseling coordinator and holds a Master of Divinity Degree from Westminster Theological Seminary and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Psychology at Immaculata University.  He has experience as a hospital chaplain, crisis worker and university counselor.   Todd is currently offsite completing the internship for his doctorate at Rowan University Counseling Center.   He will return to CCEF in September 2013.  Areas of interest/experience: marriage counseling, male issues, sexuality, trauma, schizophrenia and depression.

 

Jacklyn Tubel
Jacklyn has a Master of Arts in Biblical Counseling from Westminster Theological Seminary.  Prior to completing the internship at CCEF she spent seven years overseas as a missionary, which included evangelism and discipleship with university students.  She has also served in the church through children's ministry, women's ministry, counseling, and equipping others for ministry.  She serves as CCEF's intake coordinator.  Jacklyn is married to Wes, and enjoys movies, reading, nature, and having fun with friends.  Areas of interest/experience: women’s issues, cross-cultural issues, depression, self-injury, and marriage counseling.

 

Ed Welch
Ed is a faculty member at CCEF and holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology with a Neuro-psychology specialty from the University of Utah as well as a Master of Divinity degree from Biblical Theological Seminary.  Ed has been counseling for over 30 years and has written many books and articles on biblical counseling including, When People are Big and God is Small, Addictions: a Banquet in the Grave, Blame it on the Brain?, Depression, Running Scared, and Shame, Interrupted.  He and his wife, Sheri, have two married daughters and four grandchildren.  In his spare time Ed enjoys hanging out with his wife and extended family, and playing his guitar.  Areas of interest/experience: depression and addictions.

 

Lauren Whitman
Lauren holds a Master of Arts degree in Biblical Counseling from Westminster Theological Seminary.  She has completed the counseling internship at CCEF.  Lauren also works as an editor for the Journal of Biblical Counseling and CCEF Now magazine.  She enjoys reading, book clubs, and spending time with her husband and friends.  Areas of interest/experience: marriage counseling, anxiety, depression, and women's issues.

 

Eamon Wilson
Eamon holds a Master’s of Divinity from Westminster Theological Seminary with an emphasis in counseling and is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Psychology from Widener University.  He has served as a youth pastor, and has extensive experience in youth ministry.   Eamon and his wife Kathryn have three children.  Eamon enjoys basketball, long-distance running, board games, music, and spending time with friends and family.  Areas of interest/experience:  Marriage, anxiety, depression, premarital counseling, and men’s issues.

 

Kathryn Wilson
Kathryn holds a Master of Arts degree in Biblical Counseling from Westminster Theological Seminary and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Lakehead University.  She has completed the internship at CCEF and also has extensive ministry experience with women and youth through her local church.  Kathryn and her husband Eamon are the proud parents of three children.  Kathryn enjoys gardening, fishing, reading, baking, and spending time with friends and family.  Areas of interest/experience: marriage, depression, women’s issues, parenting.
