In his talk entitled, Solo Sex, Winston Smith unpacks the anti-relational nature of solo sex.
Where solo-sex is about anonymity, Jesus is about personal contact and intimacy. Where solo sex is about using others for pleasure, Jesus is about serving others in love. Where solo sex is about temporary pleasure for yourself, Jesus is about lasting joy, a full joy that is based on service to God and others.
Understanding the struggle this way has implications for how you minister and help the person. If you only focus on the removal of external temptation, then you can miss the relational issues embedded in this struggle, of which relationship with Christ is paramount. As Smith unpacks Scripture he shows how fellowship and communion with Christ is of central importance when battling against sexual fantasy and masturbation. He offers practical ways to apply Scripture and find help with this struggle. Smith’s talk is filled with hope—and strugglers will not be put to shame.
