Counseling Children and Adolescents (formerly Human Growth and Development)

This course examines the fundamentals of counseling children and adolescents while also exploring the developmental issues that impact human growth. This course will operate as a learning lab with an emphasis on good methodology for working with families, children and teens.
Focus includes but is not limited to: what a biblical model of family counseling looks like, issues of learning and development and counseling methodology. Common counseling problems with teens and children will also be addressed.

Counseling Observation

Students will observe counseling through a one-way mirror and meet with the counselor following the counseling session. Instead of addressing predetermined topics, the class will discuss topics that arise out of the counseling case.

This course familiarizes students with standard forms of professional conduct and care, as well as legal and ethical implications in counseling. Students explore how these standards of care may impact counseling in both church-based settings and secular contexts. The class seeks to equip students to think critically about the role and context for Biblical Counseling, while becoming acquainted with the critical areas of professional practice.
Topics covered include: standards of care, licensure, informed consent and competency, multiple relationships, record keeping, privacy laws, termination procedures, diversity and cultural issues, reporting child abuse, life-endangering clients, counselor self-care, and professional development.
